Studio: New Paintings

I hope you all had a wonderful summer!
I took a break from blogging but I hope to be back more frequently.
I just updated my shop with a few new watercolor paintings.
I've been experimenting a bit with color and form and patterns.
The funny little settee in the willow room painting features my
garden silhouettes fabric available through spoonflower.
Take a peek if you have a chance.

Studio: New Paintings

A collection of new watercolor paintings in my shop.
I've been enjoying the contrast of deep dark blues and lots of gold gouache.
Shimmering works on paper inspired by Whistler's Peacock Room and Mughal miniatures.

Sunflowers

Sunflowers four ways.
It's been raining for days. They skies are grey which I usually love,
perfect painting light. However, it's damp and cold for a May day,
I'm not so patiently waiting for the sun to shine.
It seems my palette is slightly weather dependent, hence the moody blues.
I'll have a small shop update next week with new watercolor paintings.
Have a great weekend all.

Birds in Repose

Birds surrounded by garlands of marigolds.
Trying to approach things with a looser hand.
Two new large watercolor paintings in my Etsy shop
which now offers guest checkout, no need to create an account!
Have a great weekend all!

Satin Bowerbird

I started this painting a long time ago and never finished it.
Usually I give up and move on but this week I decided to work on it again.
I find Bowerbirds fascinating. They are quite organized collectors.
Apparently, the Satin Bowerbird prefers blue. Who can blame him? Don't we all?
He presents his bounty in little piles, artfully arranged to woo his lady love.
It's quite romantic when you think about it.
This watercolor painting measures 18 x 24 inches.
I just added him to my shop.

Sunday Sketchbook

I forgot to post these pages from my sketchbook last week.
Vibrant colors, bright tulip paintings and patterns from my week working in Florida.
A little palette departure, I know, but I don't know if I really have a consistent palette.
I'm open to what's around me and this is what happens when I
leave the grey skies and dormant landscape of Virginia,
and step into a tropical paradise. Sometimes the eye has to travel.

Sunday Sketchbook

Sunday sketchbook: salon walls and silhouettes.

I've always admired the visual impact of salon style hanging of pictures.

More is more an less is a bore, no?

It's how I've always imagined my work would best present itself.

Grouped in the company of other work, a carefully curated collection,

creating a new narrative particular to the owner.

It's how I hang art at home and you might be surprised to know that
I don't have a lot of my own work hanging - one wall of vintage frames
from the old studio that I've been working on and a few other pieces here and there.
I truly enjoy collecting the work of other artists.

These notions seemed to permeate my sketchbook this week,
and became patterns and possibly backgrounds for other paintings to come.

sunday sketchbook

A peek inside my sketchbook.
A few pages from the last two weeks.
No particular order or direction, no grand gestures,
just a place to explore ideas as they come.
